Nea Kerasia

The next stop after Agia Triada is the village of Nea Kerasia. It was also founded in the context of the population exchange in 1923, with refugees who came mainly from Kerasia in Eastern Thrace, with the result that in 1928 the census recorded 263 inhabitants. The settlement that was created was initially called Karaburnou, it was renamed in 1926 to Megalo Embolo and from 1979 it took the name Nea Kerasia. Despite the difficulty of the first years, the residents managed not only to survive but also to develop the community both economically and culturally.

Findings brought to light by the archaeological dig (a large burial Tomb and two tombs from the Roman period) prove that there was activity in the area since classical times.

A reference point for the village is the holy church of the Supreme Commanders (chronologically linked to the revolution of 1821), which was inaugurated in 1818. According to tradition, the church was built on the spot where the miraculous icon of the Archangel Michael was found buried. The church is visited by many pilgrims on November 8, its feast day.
